How do I do parallel computing?

Giltrap asked:

I want to set up some parallel computing thing at home, but not sure what to do. I’ve had a look on the Internet and couldn’t really find anything.

We have 2 desktops and 2 laptops all on windows xp. I think we still have an old 98 (or 95) system somebody gave us and we have another XP system somewhere too. I’m not sure on these last two, we might have got rid of them.

I could always buy more old systems that people are chucking out or selling cheap if I don’t have enough computers to make it worth it.

What I need is some programs that let me use all my computers as 1 (so I can do Games or compute Pi or whatever I want to do) and a general idiots guide on what to do.

Thanks for any info. If you need to know something just ask in your answer =D
Hmm…

I’d have thought you could (obviously, since I asked the question) because there are dual core things now, and people do stuff with photos with parallel computing…

Why not loads of other stuff?

Actually, there are people who use it for games, they are represented on the second of these very nice graphs. http://www.llnl.gov/computing/tutorials/parallel_comp/#WhyUse

If they’re doing it, there must be some way, right?
Actually, just checked the source of the data. I’m not sure why you’d need 860 processors for a game. I think they mean game design or something to do with that…

But imagine unreal tournament on a supercomputer :D
